We are systematizing SUMEX machine accounting so that we may more
easily meet our obligations in reporting facility usage. In the past,
account fields could be entered arbitrarily at the discretion of the
user. Through the use of more standardized, project-oriented account
nomenclature, we will be able to use programs to prepare necessary
summaries of system usage by projects and project groups. We have
ao implment a system which relieves as much burden from the
user as possible, i.e., one in which the account field may be defaulted
in most cases.

As of Monday, November 11, any Exec command that requirl be executed only if the account
specou cannot log
in unless a proper explicit account or a default is specified as
described below.

For most users, account assignment is unambiguous and may be determined
from the list below. Users who our records show need to be enabled to
more than one account to properly describe their machine usage
(i.e., they work on more than one project) will be notified
individually by the end of the week of the accounts they should use.
Any user who is assigned to the wrong account or who needs to be enabled
to additional accounts should contact Karen Carpenter <CARPENTER>.
An ephemeral will be available shortly which will allow a user to list
all of his valid account codes. Needless to say, we rely on good user
judgement to properly all
The following accounts are currently implemented on the system:

Account recognition is not implemented and therefore the full, correct
account name must be given if entered explicitly. For each user there
is a default account which may be invoked when an account entry is
required as follows:

<esc> or This will display the default account and
<altmode> request confirmation. <cr> will confirm the
                        account and execute the command.

<cr> This will not display the default account but
will execute the command using the default as
                        the argument.

The default option is invoked by typing <esc> or <cr> instead of ANY
characters of the account name. <esc> does not act to force
recognition as it does otherwise in the Exec.

Please refer any questions to <CARPENTER>.
